SERGEANT

POSITION:
The Sergeant is a sworn
position under the direction of the Division Commander. The
primary duty of the Sergeant is supervision of police personnel
and functions. Other duties of the job include assistance to
patrol officers and detectives, and planning and coordinating the
assignment of personnel under their command.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
In addition to meeting all
requirements for Police Officer and Corporal, the Sergeant is
required to perform Watch Commander duties; conduct internal
investigations into alleged misconduct of police personnel; review
all reports and activities of assigned watch and submit reports to
immediate supervisor; check on and assist officers in the
performance of their duties; participate in motivation and
positive discipline programs; maintain discipline and report all
infractions of rules; participate in public relations under the
direction of the Division Commander; conduct personnel background
investigations of police applicants; supervise initial and
continuing training of police officers; supervise and/or conduct
criminal investigations; and other duties as assigned by a
Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of police
activities and procedures; skill in the supervision of personnel;
ability to motivate personnel; ability to deal effectively with
the public, and establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships with others; ability to understand ordinances and
direct watches in accordance with them; ability to understand,
interpret and follow directives and instructions from superiors;
and ability to prepare and present accurate and clear reports.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND
TRAINING:
Graduation from an
accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, plus
three (3) years of patrol experience in a sworn capacity, the last
eighteen months of which should have been with the Los Alamitos
Police Department. Other combinations of education and experience
may be suitable, subject to evaluation*.
*Law enforcement experience
(830.1 PC) other than with the Los Alamitos Police Department
will be evaluated in this open recruitment.
SPECIAL JOB RELATED
REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or
equivalent
Graduation from an accredited Police Academy
Valid California Driver's License
Possession of a P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Based upon the applications
submitted, only the most qualified candidates will be invited to an
oral interview. The top candidates will then be invited to
participate in an assessment center process (weighing 100%). Offers
of employment are contingent upon passing a chief's interview,
background investigation, polygraph, psychological test, and
pre-employment physical including drug test.

THE CITY OF LOS
ALAMITOS
The City of Los
Alamitos was incorporated March 1, 1960, and is located in West
Orange County, adjacent to the cities of Long Beach, Cypress, Seal
Beach, and Garden Grove. The City is 4.3 square miles with a
population of 12,300. Los Alamitos is a Charter City and operates
under the Council/Manager form of government. The City prides itself
in the high level of quality services provided to our citizens.
EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
WORK SCHEDULE:
3-12 work schedule for uniformed patrol officers.
UNIFORMS: Uniform
and equipment provided on appointment, plus a uniform cleaning
allowance of $20 per pay period (approximately $40/mo.)
VACATION: 80
hours after one year. After two years of service, 8 additional hours
are accumulated for each year to a maximum of 176 hours.
OVERTIME:
Overtime is computed at 1½ pay or compensatory time off.
SICK LEAVE: Eight
hours for each calendar month of service.
RETIREMENT: CHP
plan - 2% at 50, based on the final year's compensation. Full 9%
employee contribution paid by City in employee's name.
*3% at 50 plan will commence no later than August 1, 2005.
INSURANCE: The
City provides a comprehensive group insurance program for all
permanent employees, including health, life, dental and vision.
Health, dental and vision insurance coverage is available for
dependents. Maximum allowance is $590 per month.
HOLIDAYS: 88 paid
holiday hours per year, plus 16 floating holiday hours.
DEFERRED
COMPENSATION: Participation is available and optional.

Non-smoking Policy adopted by the City prohibits smoking in City
Facilities.
