Stop Tobacco
Access to Kids Enforcement
It is important to stop kids
from using tobacco…
Tobacco is strongly
addictive.
The earlier kids smoke, the
more likely they are to become heavily addicted and the harder it is for them
to quit.
Tobacco use is the number
one preventable killer in California today.
It kills
more than
40,000
Californians
each year.
Tobacco kills more people
each year in California than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide,
suicide, car accidents, fires, and AIDS combined.
The sale of tobacco products
to persons under 18 years of age is prohibited by law and subject to penalties.
The highest rate of illegal
sales occurs at non-traditional retailers such as donut shops, discount
stores, and
deli/meat markets.
Tobacco
retailers are required to check the identification of every tobacco purchaser
that appears to be under the age of 18.
Warning signs must be posted
by retailers stating that selling tobacco to individuals under 18 years of age
is prohibited by law and subject to penalties.
Signs must also state that
valid identification may be required.
Customers may report
underage tobacco sales by calling toll-free 1-800-5-ASK-4-ID
