Suspected Driver from January 27th Fatal Hit & Run Identified and Charged

The Los Alamitos Police Department has completed its investigation of the January 27, 2005 hit & run collision that claimed the life of a 19 year-old Cypress resident. Charges have been filed against Gerald Cross, age 77, of San Juan Capistrano for failing to remain at the scene of the accident, a felony.

At approximately 5:30 AM on January 27th, Christopher McCabe was struck and killed as he walked in the northbound lanes of Los Alamitos Blvd. between Rossmoor Way and Bradbury. Neither the driver nor any witnesses remained at the scene. Evidence collected at the scene suggested that the vehicle involved in the collision was a green Dodge pickup.

The following day, Los Alamitos Police officers located a 1996 Dodge pickup that had been taken to a Signal Hill body shop for repairs. Police suspected vehicle’s owner, Gerald Cross, was the driver involved in the hit and run collision. Today, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed hit & run charges against Cross. Failing to remain at the scene of an accident is a felony when the accident results in injury or death. Cross will be ordered to court for arraignment next month.

In addition to identifying Mr. Cross as the suspected hit and run driver, the investigation revealed that the collision was caused by the pedestrian in the roadway.
