The Citizens’ Academy was developed
to provide citizens with an understanding of law enforcement’s role in
the community. This ten-week program provides an overview of Los
Alamitos Police Department’s structure, philosophy, operations and
services. Through hands-on demonstrations and exercises, participants
will experience a variety of activities the police officers deal with on
a daily basis. They will also have the opportunity to complete a police
ride-along. Since this course is offered in conjunction with Golden West
College, participants must register for the course through the College
and will receive one unit of college credit.
Applicants to the program must be at least 18 years of age, must live or
work in Los Alamitos, must not have any felony convictions, and must not
have any misdemeanor arrests within one year of application to the
program. Due to the sensitive nature of information provided in the
program, final acceptance for the academy will be at the discretion of
the Chief of Police. Selection procedures require completion of an
application and a modified personal history statement, an oral interview
and a cursory background.
For additional information or presentation dates, please contact the
Police Department at (562) 431-2255.
